Short-term rentals require a Hampton business license, and an approved permit. New guidelines have been proposed that will, among other things, limit the density of short-term rentals (STRs) to ensure that they don't affect the character of neighborhoods. The new proposed zoning district overlays would control the distribution and density of STRs across the city. The proposed administrative permit path will cost less and move much faster than the process for a use permit. People who have already applied for use permits will have the option of shifting to an administrative queue if the proposal is adopted. For operators of short-term rentals, these proposals would shift the process from a $650 use permit fee and two public hearings to a more streamlined staff permit with a $200 application fee. A short-term rental includes a residence used for vacation or brief rentals, such as through commercial sites such as AirBnB or VRBO. It includes rentals that are 30 days or less of residential accommodations, which can be a portion of a home, the entire home, or even an apartment.
